Melna Jones

Leadership can be one of the most rewarding experiences of your career. It can also be one of the most confusing. I know that firsthand.

Early in my leadership career, I stepped into a management role feeling prepared on paper. I had spent years training, studying, and working toward the opportunity. Yet once I arrived, I quickly realized that the reality of leadership was far more complex than I expected.

That first year was one of the most exciting, humbling, and challenging seasons of my professional life. I often wished there had been someone available to act as a sounding board — someone who understood the pressures of leadership and could help me think through difficult decisions.

That experience stayed with me and eventually shaped the work I do today.

A Career Built on Leadership

For more than 25 years I served in leadership roles across the military and multiple federal government agencies.

During that time, I saw firsthand how talented professionals are often promoted into leadership roles without the support or development needed to succeed.

They are capable, intelligent, and driven. But leadership requires a different set of skills — communication, influence, decision-making, and the ability to guide others through uncertainty.

Many leaders are left to figure those skills out on their own. That gap is what Simply Lead Coaching was created to address.

Why I Founded Simply Lead Coaching

I founded Simply Lead Coaching to help emerging and transitioning leaders develop the confidence, clarity, and leadership capability needed to thrive in their roles.

My work focuses on leaders who find themselves in situations many of us recognize:

  • stepping into leadership for the first time
  • inheriting a team they didn’t build
  • navigating increased expectations and responsibility
  • questioning whether they are truly ready for the role

These moments can feel overwhelming. But with the right support, they become powerful opportunities for growth.

My Approach to Leadership Development

Leadership growth doesn’t happen through information alone. It happens through reflection, conversation, and intentional development.

At Simply Lead Coaching, leaders move through a structured journey designed to help them:

  • understand how they naturally lead
  • strengthen confidence and decision-making
  • navigate complex leadership situations
  • expand their influence and impact

Many leaders begin with a Leadership Strategy Conversation, which helps clarify where they are and what kind of development will be most valuable.

From there, leaders may explore deeper insight through the Leadership DNA experience, participate in the Leadership Reset Lab, or engage in coaching and executive strategy work.

Every leader’s journey is different, but the goal is always the same: Helping leaders lead with clarity, confidence, and intention.

What Others Are Saying

Leaders often come to coaching feeling overwhelmed, uncertain, or under intense pressure.

Our work together creates space to think clearly, regain perspective, and move forward with confidence.

Here are a few reflections from leaders who have experienced that process.

"I love how Melna challenges me with questions that dig below the surface level. She pushes me to think about my approach and my behaviors in a way that allows me to draw my own conclusions and then take action. ”
Jen

“I love that Melna is always so flexible with the topics I would like to discuss. She easily pivots and provides great value and perspective on a wide range of topics. She is so skilled at incorporating coaching and creating "aha moments" during any dialogue.”
Steve

"Melna was amazing at listening and empathizing and helping me navigate a path through a complex situation that I had not dealt with previously. She also gave me the confidence to believe in myself and my capabilities as a leader.”
Rosalind
